PRESS RELEASE from Fundación Chile
September 16, 2024

  • The objective is to provide information that will guide public efforts and instruments for the development of suppliers associated with the green hydrogen value chain, particularly in the Magallanes Region and Chilean Antarctica.
  • The study, within the framework of the Magellan Pact, is promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism through the Sustainable Productive Development Program, and will be carried out by Fundación Chile and Grupo Singular.

In order to map relevant information to guide public efforts and instruments for the development of suppliers associated with the green hydrogen industry value chain, the Ministry of Economy has mandated a study of supplier gaps and opportunities, which will be carried out by Fundación Chile and Grupo Singular, the results of which are expected to be obtained by the end of this year.

This work will consider studies already carried out and will be complemented with new information and analysis, systematizing the information through specific diagnoses for the industry segments with the greatest potential to develop suppliers at the local level in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region and at the national level, thus enabling the subsequent creation of promotion and development plans for such niches.

Aintzane Lorca, head of the Sustainable Productive Development Division of the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism, highlighted the importance of having this information for territorial development and the green hydrogen industry: “Through this study we seek to identify the challenges and gaps in terms of suppliers for the sustainable development of this industry in the region and the country. This information is key to better focus public instruments and policies in a coordinated manner with institutions such as Corfo and SERCOTEC, in order to strengthen the network of local suppliers that participate in this industry and develop the segments with the greatest potential in the value chain.”

The consultancy will be carried out in two stages. Andrés Labbé, director of Green Hydrogen Investments at Fundación Chile, explains that the first phase “focuses on defining key requirements and diagnosing suppliers for the development of the green hydrogen industry in Magallanes. We will carry out a survey of service and input requirements, in which we will investigate, through interviews and other means of gathering information, the needs of the companies developing projects in Magallanes for the timely deployment of the industry.”

For the general diagnosis of local and national suppliers, the study will be taken as a basis   “Productive chains of the green hydrogen industry and derivatives in Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica” mandated by the German international cooperation agency GIZ and the Chilean Ministry of Energy in 2023.

Mauricio Ojeda, manager of Grupo Singular and researcher of said study, highlighted the results obtained on that occasion and the valuable guidance it provides for this new research: “During 2023, with the collaboration of public and private actors, we worked to dimension the magnitude of the industry in the territory, map existing capacities and open the value chain to identify potential opportunities with greater precision. This allows us to now address specific gaps in sectors of interest, seeking to promote the sustainable development of Magallanes and the connection with other regions of the country.”

The study will be directly linked to the Transforma H2V Magallanes Program, led by the Regional Directorate of CORFO Magallanes and the Regional Government. The final stage of the study includes a specific diagnosis of suppliers in the value chain of the new energy industry, identifying gaps in four segments with the greatest development potential in the region.
