AAA opens US$28mn wastewater collection system

Bnamericas
Puerto Rico's water utility AAA has inaugurated a US$28mn wastewater collection system in the coastal municipality of Guánica. The new system eliminates the need for septic tanks in the area and will protect coastal waters in the southwestern municipality, said AAA president José Ortiz. Works included construction of a pumping station and installation of pipeline to transfer wastewater to a treatment plant in Guánica. The existing plant at Playa Santa will be closed, according to the release. Funds were provided for the two-phase project by the US environmental protection agency (EPA) and the Puerto Rico government's Creole economic stimulus plan.
