By the Ministry of Energy and Mines
President Luis Abinader created Empresa Minera Dominicana, S.A. (EMIDOM) through decree 453-24 to promote the sustainable extraction of the country's strategic resources, with a special focus on rare earths.
Rare earths are seventeen key elements for the manufacture of advanced technologies, renewable energy and electronic devices.
The Dominican Republic has significant potential in these resources, whose sustainable use can strengthen technological and energy sovereignty, as well as promote the economic, scientific and technological development of the country.
According to reports, EMIDOM will be responsible for leading the search for and extraction of strategic mineral resources. It will also assess the economic viability of mining projects through studies and consultancies.
In terms of reserve management, it will manage fiscal mining reserves, such as the “Ávila” Fiscal Mining Reserve in Pedernales. In addition, it will establish contracts and alliances with global companies to ensure the efficient and sustainable exploitation of these resources.
The creation of this entity will facilitate the transfer of technology, improving the country's technical and scientific capabilities.
It will also focus on specialized training to develop human resources in the mining sector.
EMIDOM will contribute to the generation of quality employment and promote inclusive and equitable socioeconomic development, with special attention to respect for the environment and local communities.
Revenues generated by mining extraction will be allocated to investments in infrastructure, education and health, with the aim of contributing to the general well-being of the country.
Governance and Transparency
The entity will be attached to the Ministry of Energy and Mines and will have a nine-member Board of Directors, chaired by the Minister of the Presidency. The company will adopt high standards of governance and transparency, ensuring that its operations benefit the Dominican State and society as a whole.
With this initiative, the government reaffirms its commitment to sustainable and responsible development of natural resources, aimed at promoting economic and social progress in the Dominican Republic.
