Additional work to tackle erosion planned for Ecuador’s principal power plant

Further work to guarantee operations of Ecuador’s largest power plant, the 1.5GW Coca Codo Sinclair hydro, is due to begin in the coming months.
State power corporation Celec launched bidding to draft the definitive design of the stepped spillway as part of defensive measures to protect the plant’s water intake from erosion of the Coca river.
The concept design was prepared by the US Army Corps of Engineers which has been providing technical assistance since 2020 to address the erosion caused by the failure of the San Rafael waterfall.
The consultant selected for the final design will also prepare documents for the spillway’s construction.
Offers for the U$1.65mn, 360-day contract are due by November 19, according to procurement information.
