With the purpose of implementing Distributed Generation and promoting the use of renewable energies, the Electricity and Nuclear Technology Supervision Authority (AETN) approved new regulations and rates so that users generate their own electricity from their homes, use energy from more efficiently and take care of the environment.

Distributed Generation is a system that offers Bolivians the opportunity to become active participants in the production of electricity through small, environmentally friendly renewable sources, such as solar panels, installed on homes and buildings.

The executive director of AETN, Eusebio Aruquipa, presented at a press conference the regulations and rates that give the green light to the implementation of distributed generation with renewable energies up to a power of 500 kilowatts (kW) and self-producers of more than 500 kW. Below are the approved regulatory standards that came into effect on July 5 of this year.

Registration of Specialized Companies : Establishes the requirements and guidelines to register companies specialized in the design, installation and adaptation of Distributed Generation systems with renewable energies. These companies must register with the AETN and obtain the necessary authorization from the corresponding electrical distributor or operator.

Self-production with Distributed Generation : Defines the requirements and procedure for the registration of industrial consumers, mass transportation or basic services that produce their own electrical energy through decentralized systems of renewable sources. This process applies to regulated consumers who use energy for their own exclusive consumption.

“Self-producers with Distributed Generation, such as state entities, commercial companies, cooperatives or individuals that carry out industrial activities, may inject electrical energy at one or more points and withdraw it at different points within the area of operation of the distributor where they are registered,” he explained. Aruquipa.

Remuneration for Injected Electrical Energy : Establishes the compensation mechanism for the electrical energy that self-producers inject into the local distribution network. It also allows surplus energy to accumulate for up to 24 months.

Information and Registration Procedures : They detail the procedures to collect and send information to the regulatory body of distributed generators and self-producers of distributed generation. In addition, the requirements for the registration and incorporation of distributed generators into the distribution network are specified.

Registration and Update Fees : Sets the amounts that installation companies and self-producers must pay for the right to register and update in the distributed generation registry.
