Agunsa reveals Valparaíso cruise port project

Chilean state port operator EPV confirmed that it received a project proposal from multinational Agunsa to develop a cruise-exclusive terminal in the port of Valparaíso, which has suffered the loss of cruise arrivals this season.

The proposed port would be able to handle two 300m-long cruise liners simultaneously, a press release from EPV said.

The port operator's CEO, Gonzalo Davagnino, said that Agunsa's proposal highlights the interest held by the private sector in complementing the EPV-led effort to recover Valparaíso's cruise line industry. EPV is working on a project of its own and has hired advising firm Moffatt & Nichol to do the feasibility studies.

Agunsa's proposal will go through a 90-day review period carried out by EPV technical teams.

Ever since a Valparaíso port workers' protest in February left tourists unable to deboard their cruise ships, several cruise lines decided to call on San Antonio port for the 2017-18 season.
