Airbus, Axtel reach deal for Mexican security MVNO

The security communications unit of Airbus and Mexican telecommunications company Axtel will partner to create a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) for the security and defense forces in the country using the Red Compartida wholesale network, according to media reports.

The new network will complement the law enforcement national radiocommunications network, known as the IRIS network, which is operated by Airbus.

Fred Gallart, head of Airbus Secure Land Communications for Latin America, was quoted as saying that the idea is to start offering a technologically advanced service for security forces in Mexico this year.

Airbus' Tetrapol communications platform has been criticized as outdated by competitors.

The Red Compartida offers wholesale capacity for services such as high speed mobile internet.
