Mexico City, October 16, 2024 — For the second consecutive year, Amazon today launched its Economic Impact Report in Mexico. After 9 years of local operations, Amazon reiterates its commitment to Mexico and its contribution to the development and growth of its communities with investments of more than $110 billion pesos accumulated since 2015, of which, in 2023 alone, it allocated more than $28 billion in investments ranging from infrastructure development to employee compensation.

"We are certain of the great results and opportunities that Mexico offers to Amazon's global business. Therefore, our commitment to this vibrant country is long-term and proof of this are the investments we make each year to benefit our customers, employees, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), local communities, as well as the planet we cohabit. We are convinced that, to maintain our success, we have to continue generating shared value and I am convinced that all our efforts will continue to be directed towards this," said Pedro Huerta, Country Manager of Amazon Mexico.

In addition to its financial contribution, Amazon has consolidated its efforts to support employability in Mexico. Today, the company generates more than 50,000 jobs throughout the country, divided into more than 10,000 direct jobs and more than 40,000 indirect jobs. These jobs cover key sectors such as logistics, construction, e-commerce, technological production, investment in Artificial Intelligence and cloud services, which, in turn, drives the growth of various communities.

During 2024, the company has also made commitments to boost the local economy in different states of the country. At the beginning of 2024, Amazon announced the opening of a new Shipping Center in Apodaca, Nuevo León, with a size equivalent to 6 professional soccer fields and a maximum capacity of approximately 900,000 items. In addition, during the last quarter of 2024, Amazon will expand its presence in Jalisco with a second Shipping Center in this state. This center has dimensions equivalent to 5.2 professional soccer fields and a maximum capacity of approximately 750,000 items, which will generate more than 2,000 jobs in the locality.

"At Amazon, we recognize that the success of our operations depends largely on the commitment and dedication of our talent. Since 2014, Amazon has created and expanded a global logistics network from scratch, allowing us to offer customers what they want, when they want it, and wherever they want it. The opening of new centers in Nuevo León and Jalisco is a testament to our investment in the future, and we are convinced that, together, we will continue to drive innovation and growth in the country," added Diego Méndez, General Director of Operations for Amazon Mexico.

In its report, Amazon also reaffirms its commitment to Mexican SMEs and entrepreneurs. To date, Amazon Mexico has almost 27,000 sellers, representing a 52% increase over the previous year, and together they offer more than 5 million products in the store. So far in 2024, Amazon has trained more than 11,000 Mexican entrepreneurs and small business owners through nearly 200 webinars and events, offering hundreds of hours of educational content and activities in collaboration with state and local governments and small business accelerators to grow their businesses and reach new customers both in the country and around the world.

In its delivery operations, Amazon Mexico also collaborates with thousands of suppliers and entrepreneurs in an interconnected network of transportation, logistics sites, and technologies that enable faster package delivery. Through last-mile programs such as Hub Delivery, Amazon Flex, and Amazon Seliver Service Partners (DSP), Amazon has contributed to the creation of indirect jobs in Mexico.

In addition, the various business lines and programs that Amazon operates in Mexico open the door to collaboration and shared development in different industries. For example:

  • Entertainment with productions. Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video have made significant investments in Mexico. The local teams of Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video have been working in Mexico since 2018, with more than 20 local production companies and since its launch in Mexico, Amazon MGM Studios has generated more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs with the production of more than 50 original local titles that highlight local culture.
  • Cloud Computing Skills. Since 2017, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has trained 500,000 people in cloud skills in Mexico. Thanks to the alliance with key organizations to strengthen the impact of its training initiatives and empower more individuals with the skills necessary to succeed in the evolution of the digital economy. In addition, in February 2024, AWS announced its plans to invest more than $85 billion pesos in Mexico over the next 15 years.

In parallel, Amazon in Mexico maintains its commitment to the communities in which it operates, as well as to the planet; these are some of the local efforts that Amazon promotes:

  • Disaster relief. Our Amazon Disaster Relief team donated more than 103,000 essential items to support organizations operating on the ground when Hurricane Otis hit Acapulco in late 2023. They also supported affected communities through donations to the Mexican Red Cross, the Mexican Association of Food Banks, and the United Nations International Organization for Migration.
  • Building stronger communities. Amazon has supported the Mexican Food Bank Network (BAMX) with the goal of donating a total of 4,000 food pantries in 2023. Additionally, Amazon donated 40 tons of staple grains (beans, rice, and lentils) to BAMX to support 18 local food banks. For every unique volunteer and hour of volunteer work, Amazon donated a meal to community members experiencing food insecurity. Additionally, during 2024, 1,283 unique volunteers have been engaged in various volunteer activities who have logged around 7,220 volunteer hours.
  • Environmental conservation. Since the end of 2023, Amazon Mexico has stopped selling single-use plastic products (such as cotton swabs, cutlery, plates, straws, drink stirrers, lightweight plastic bags, balloon sticks for consumer use, among others), in line with regulations that promote their elimination. It has also managed to have around 8% of national shipments delivered in their own packaging. With these and other initiatives, the company has avoided more than 2 million tons of delivery packaging worldwide since 2015. In addition, Amazon Mexico boxes are made of 100% recycled cardboard. In 2023, Amazon, globally, invested $10 million in C40 and The Climate Pledge to launch Laneshift, an initiative aimed at accelerating the decarbonization of the industry by using low-emission options for last-mile fleets and redesigning the routes they travel. The project will accelerate the development of electric vehicle infrastructure and the deployment of electric trucks in key cities in India and Latin America, such as Mexico City, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Looking ahead, Amazon reaffirms its commitment to continue investing in Mexico, creating jobs and promoting economic development. To learn more, visit the full report at this link.
