Amazon basin to benefit from modeling tool

IDB has issued a call for expressions of interest to develop an integrated modeling tool to improve planning of the Amazon basin – an important source of hydropower.

“There is a need for quantitative (modeling) tools to support the conceptualization and analysis of scenarios to visualize different regional results taking into account the economic, environmental, social and institutional dynamics, among others, of the region,” according to the development bank.

The basin covers some 7.4Mkm2 in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.

The 24-month contract will include the development of metrics for energy investment needs, among other sectors. Reference terms are available here.

In February, the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) pre-launched a project to implement a strategic action program to safeguard the basin’s water resources.

A month earlier, ACTO inked a cooperation agreement with the United Nations Environment Programme for the Global Environment Facility-funded initiative.
