Amazon obtains approval for second Chile datacenter

Amazon Web Services secured approval for a second datacenter in Chile.

The company, which had received approval from the environmental review agency (SEA) for its datacenter in Padre Hurtado, has now secured approval for its Huechuraba data storage center project. Both are in the Santiago metropolitan region and involve estimated investment of US$205mn each.

THE PROJECT

The Huechuraba datacenter will be on a 10.9ha property and will have two buildings that include data rooms (servers, network devices and cables), offices, electrical and mechanical rooms, and materials storage rooms.

In addition, low water consumption air conditioning and cooling systems, fire control systems and 23 emergency electrical generators will be built, with their respective diesel fuel storage tanks.

Parking lots, a fuel resupply area, an emergency generator yard, a mechanical yard, internal roads and green areas, among others, are also planned.

Construction will be in three stages. In the first, lasting 19 months, the first half of building 1, the infrastructure and the exterior of the campus will be completed. The second stage, lasting 15 months, foresees the construction of the second half of the building.

In the third stage, a second building will be built. That stage will last 17 months. The project has a useful life estimated at 30 years.
