AMLO to intervene in Equinox Gold mine dispute
Mexico’s President Andrés López Obrador (AMLO) said he will intervene to resolve a dispute at Equinox Gold’s Los Filos mine.
Equinox said last week it had suspended operations at the Guerrero state gold operation due to a roadblock by residents in the nearby Carrizalillo community.
Members of the Carrizalillo ejido or landowners cooperative accused the company of breaching a 2019 agreement, local daily La Jornada reported.
“In this case in particular we are offering to intervene ... we are going to attend to the affected parties in order to seek a resolution,” AMLO said in a press conference.
The president said his administration has inherited mining conflicts, including disputes with communities, workers and unions.
The government is seeking to resolve long-running strikes at Grupo México’s Cananea (now Buenavista) and Taxco assets, and seeking to resolve conflicts in Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Guerrero and Oaxaca states, he added.
Los Filos is one of Mexico’s largest gold mines, with Equinox planning to roughly double output to around 350,000oz/y through a US$213mn expansion.
