Anatel to decide Brasil Telecom squabble by mid-Nov.

Brazil's telecoms regulator Anatel will decide whether to allow Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI) to recoup its original 38% stake in the company that controls Brasil Telecom within two months, Anatel president Luiz Guilherme Schymura told reporters Wednesday. Anatel must first confirm that Brasil Telecom has met build out goals and immediately afterward will take a position on the Telecom Italia stake, he said. The regulator Anatel wants to ensure that "big players" such as Telecom Italia do not abandon investments in Brazil, Schymura said. All arguments would be heard but the regulator would stick to the law, he said. Schymura would not confirm recent speculation that if Telecom Italia returns to the block, Brasil Telecom would be prevented from launching mobile service. Analysts said local regulations do not allow one company to own shares in two operators competing in the same region.
