Anatel's president Carlos Baigorri advocated that regulators in Latin America and the Caribbean strengthen cooperation ties to face the challenges of the digital ecosystem and ensure countries' sovereignty on the internet, which is threatened by the lack of legislation capable of providing States with instruments capable of curbing abuses in the virtual environment.

"It is difficult to establish uniform laws and regulations in all countries, but we can base ourselves on the same principles for regulating the digital economy within our region. Digital challenges are challenges for all of us. We have the institutional maturity to implement this regulation of the digital economy," said Baigorri on Wednesday (4/12), at the ICT LAC Summit.

The event, which brings together regulators from 15 countries, takes place in Salvador and is promoted by Anatel and the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) of Mexico, with support, among others, from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).

Baigorri explained that there is a need for a joint repositioning of States to define mechanisms that ensure a healthy environment on the internet, which allow, for example, the accountability of digital platforms and make anonymity on social networks difficult.

"It's not about cutting and pasting models from other countries, but rather about learning from the mistakes and successes of international experiences and adopting our own path. If we are together, we are stronger," he said.

The president of Anatel recalled that Brazil adopted original solutions to expand internet coverage, such as simplifying the granting of licenses and reducing barriers to entry for competitors, without imposing sharing obligations. "Today we have more fiber optics than Europe, which shows that this decision was the most appropriate for our reality," he compared.
