The Provincial Municipality of Huaraz, in the Ancash region, will execute the first public investment project in the country in whose formulation the possible effects of climate change and the respective actions to face them have been incorporated. This is the improvement and expansion of the water service for irrigation in the towns of Toma Grande, Cruz Pampa and Picup, in the district of Independencia.

According to the general director of Climate Change and Desertification of the Ministry of the Environment (Minam), Milagros Sandoval, this initiative will benefit 157 families from the towns of Póngor, Picup, Chua, Cotu, Cochapampa and Cashaucro, located in the Cordillera Negra, where the main economic activity is agriculture.

He added that, in the face of the global climate emergency, said sector works to strengthen the capacities of local actors and sectors for the implementation of Our Climate Challenge (NDC). This complies with the provisions of the Paris Agreement and generates social and environmental benefits in the communities.

For his part, the district mayor of Independencia, Rafael Gonzáles, pointed out that thanks to the aforementioned project it will be possible to implement the irrigation system with a diversion channel, a reservoir and a pressurized irrigation system. In addition, adaptation measures to climate change will also be carried out, such as the improvement and construction of reservoirs for the provision of water services for agricultural use; among other.

For this purpose, an approximate investment of S/ 9,180,000 is estimated. For measures or actions related to risk reduction in a context of climate change, around S/. 3,400,000 (37.12% of the total amount).

This joint action has the support of the project Adaptation to the Impacts of Climate Change on Water Resources in the Andes (AICCA).
