Anglo American advances use of autonomous equipment in Brazilian operations
Mining giant Anglo American is expanding the use of autonomous equipment in its Brazilian operations.
The London-based company launch an autonomous drilling rig at its Conceição do Mato Dentro iron ore operation in Minas Gerais state and is planning more.
“The first autonomous drilling rig comes into operation now, and the project is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2025, with the implementation, in total, of five new autonomous drilling rigs, promoting significant improvements in the work environment and operations,” Aurélio Garcia, executive manager of mine operations at Anglo American, said in a statement.
“People who already worked in the area received training to operate the new equipment and more professionals must be hired.”
According to the firm, the automation of drilling rigs aims to improve the quality of life of operators, reducing exposure to vibrations, and increasing safety and productivity.
Mining companies in Brazil have expanded the use of autonomous vehicles and equipment in recent years in an attempt to reduce the number of accidents. Other major companies like Vale already have dozens of autonomous vehicles and equipment operated in their mines in Brazil.
