Anglo set to replace CEO in Brazil

Anglo American announced that the CEO of its Brazilian operations, Ruben Fernandes (pictured), will succeed Duncan Wanblad as CEO of the company's base metals division, effective March 1, and will be replaced in the country by Wilfred (Bill) Bruijn.

With the move, Wanblad will focus solely on his role as group director of strategy and business development.

Anglo is shuffling its management team following the decision to divide the management of its global base metals business from its strategy and business development activities, the London-headquartered company said in a release on Thursday.

"As we progress the transformation of Anglo American's performance to unlock our full potential, it is appropriate that we allocate dedicated executive responsibility to these two important portfolios," Anglo CEO Mark Cutifani said.

"Ruben will work closely with the Copper team in Chile, the Quellaveco project development team and our mineral discovery team as we map out our extensive long-term growth options for this key product area that is key to enabling a cleaner, more electrified and richer world."

Cutifani added that Fernandes "Will build on the significant turnaround in operational performance embedded by Duncan Wanblad and take forward our global business strategy for copper and other base metals."

The company also stated that Bruijn will succeed Fernandes as CEO of Anglo American in Brazil, reporting to Seamus French, CEO of bulk commodities.

"Bill brings more than 25 years of experience in the mining industry, most recently as CEO of Mineração Usiminas, the iron ore mining joint venture in Brazil between Usiminas and Sumitomo," Anglo said in the release.

Bruijn is due to join Anglo American on January 4 and will work with Fernandes on the transition before taking up his role on March 1.

According to the UK-based miner, Fernandes will join the group management committee of Anglo American upon taking up his new role.
