“Technology brings the world and people closer, but in Uruguay it had citizens who were not first class, who were isolated,” said the president of Antel, Gabriel Gurméndez, at the inauguration of the company's stand on the grounds of the Expo Prado 2023. In that sense, he recalled that the entity invested almost 300 million dollars in improving connectivity in interior departments.

The secretary of the Presidency of the Republic, Álvaro Delgado, also participated in the inauguration, held on the afternoon of this Wednesday the 13th; and the ministers of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Fernando Mattos; and Tourism, Tabaré Viera.

Gurméndez highlighted in his speech three aspects that marked the work of the board in this period: competitiveness, accountability within the country and the social sensitivity of the entity. “We brought technology and modernity, we invested and lowered the price of telecommunications in gigabytes by four times less since we assumed the presidency,” he indicated.

Likewise, he highlighted the work to "correct the lag in the equity of the arrival of public service to the interior of the country." In that sense, he reported that Antel invested 270 million dollars in three years in the deployment of telecommunications, mobile and fixed networks in the interior. This allowed about 170 localities, towns, towns and cities to be incorporated into the network, which “accessed internet services with a copper cable, without fiber optics,” he said.

The leader stated that, in 2023, some 180,000 homes in the interior of the country migrated to the fiber optic system, which he considered as equitable access to the service. In addition, 110,000 points of the territory were intervened to improve capacity and 173 sites where there was no connection were incorporated.

“As a public company, we must provide equal opportunities in access to telecommunications services,” he said.
