Press release from ComexPeru

Lima - APEC contributes to the diversification of markets for Peruvian agricultural exports, which find access to new consumers in this economic bloc, said ComexPerú, indicating that joint work on phytosanitary opening and trade agreements is required to take advantage of this potential.

“The joint work on phytosanitary opening and trade agreements generates new opportunities that contribute to the sustained growth of our foreign trade,” said the association. It noted that steps are already being taken in this direction, with favorable results.

In this context, ComexPerú indicated that, in March 2023, the phytosanitary opening of grapes for the Japanese market was achieved and in September of that year the first shipments were made to that destination. In the last four months of 2023, US$ 7.9 million was exported and, between January and May 2024, exports of the fruit to that country reached US$ 1.3 million.

"The figures indicate a favorable start for our shipments of this product to the Japanese market, which bought grapes from around the world for a value of US$ 177 million in 2023, according to figures from the International Trade Centre (ITC)," the union said.

Likewise, in January 2024, the phytosanitary opening for the export of Peruvian Hass avocados to Malaysia, an APEC member economy, was achieved. “Thanks to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), we have a trade agreement that allows Peruvian avocado exports to not pay tariffs when entering this market.”

Following the recent conclusion of negotiations for the Optimization of the FTA with China, the phytosanitary opening for grape exports by air was announced. With this, ComexPerú said, Peru's offer is complemented for a market segment that requires delivery in shorter times. "In addition, progress was made towards obtaining a future phytosanitary opening for fresh pomegranates and pecans," the association noted, noting that APEC represents important opportunities for Peruvian agricultural exports.
