ARESEP will supervise thermal generation

This Aresep release was published using machine translation.

This year thermal generation has a cost of ¢96 billion, which impacts the electricity rate.

In 2024, according to the forecasts and estimates available, it is expected that during the first semester it will be equally dry as in 2023, which is why ICE will have to generate thermal energy: it will use its own plants that use bunkers, and new rented plants, tendered last year, which run on diesel.

The El Niño climate phenomenon, during the year 2023, led to an increase in electricity rates applicable to the National Electric System (SEN) as of January 1, 2024, to guarantee national energy demand and avoid blackouts.

To measure the impact of the El Niño phenomenon, according to the Mayor of Energy, Mario Mora, “ after 8 years, during which thermal generation represented on average around 1%, only in 2023 it closed around 8%.”

ARESEP analyzes the quarterly information that electricity companies must submit, and will rigorously monitor all the variables that determine the Variable Cost of Generation (CVG).

In this sense, through official letter OF-0051-IE-2024, the eight electricity companies were informed about the scheduling of technical visits and inspections, in order to assess the evolution of their generation systems and determine, in a timely manner , any deviation that could lead to a higher thermal generation than projected.

This monitoring is necessary because in 2025 the CVG charge must be updated, which will be determined by:

  • The inclusion of ¢43 billion pending recognition to ICE, for the thermal generation it carried out in 2023.
  • The inclusion of any deviation that is generated in the thermal generation projections for 2024, estimated at ¢96 billion.

The inclusion of thermal generation projections for 2025.
