Argentina, Chile restarting freight rail service
Chilean private rail operator Ferronor and Argentine state rail company Belgrano Cargas are relaunching a freight rail service, the only one between the two countries.
The route (pictured) is 900km long between Argentina's Salta province and Chile's Antofagasta port.
The line will be used for mineral output from northern and north-central Argentina, according to a release from the country's presidential office.
The service stopped operating in 2010 after an accident, Santiago newspaper El Mercurio reported last September.
Ferronor general manager Juan Carlos García-Huidobro said at the time that initially the service would move around 100,000t/y, although the aim is to raise the figure to 2Mt/y.
Agricultural output from Argentina could also be transported in the future, according to previous reports.
The first shipment of 500t of lime was due to leave Wednesday from San Antonio de los Cobres (Salta) bound for Chile's Escondida copper mine.
