Argentina installs 1st electric vehicle charging station
State oil and power company YPF has installed Argentina's first electric vehicle charging station, in Buenos Aires.
The station is located at the YPF ACA Palermo service station, at the crossroads of Godoy Cruz and Demaría, and is the first of a planned 20 stations to be installed this year; phase one of a plan to install 200 charging points at 110 service stations, YPF said in a press release.
The plan is being carried out under an alliance between YPF, ABB and QEV Argentina.
The installation of the charging points is a necessary step toward meeting future demand from electric vehicles, to ensure optimum coverage for owners of such vehicles.
Last May, President Mauricio Macri granted China-based manufacturer BYD permission to build an electric vehicle plant in the country.
The chargers, which will be operational within 60 days, charge 80% of a car's battery in a lapse of between 15-30 minutes, and are fitted with georadar, allowing motorists to find their nearest station. Payment is made by credit card.
The installation of the charging stations will cost US$13mn, YPF said.
