Argentina launches US$185mn dredging tender

Argentina’s transport ministry launched a 40.4bn-peso (US$185mn) tender to build the Magdalena canal in the mouth of the River Plate to link it with the country’s territorial sea.

The project entails dredging 54km between the Punta Indio canal and the 11m isobath of the river, documents show.

Ships currently using the River Plate and going from ports such as Buenos Aires or Rosario have to go into Uruguayan waters before accessing the ocean.

“This makes no national or economic sense,” Buenos Aires province governor Axel Kicillof was quoted as saying by state news agency Télam.

Meanwhile, President Alberto Fernández said the canal will boost development in the Buenos Aires district of Ensenada.

Dates to submit and open bids have yet to be disclosed. Documents can be seen here (in Spanish).
