Argentina’s biggest generator planning 300MW solar park in mining jurisdiction

Argentina’s federal energy department updated its registry of renewable energy projects, known as Renper.

The list includes generation, co-generation and self-supply projects under development that will connect to the grid and comprises new inscriptions as well as amendments to existing ones.

Among the new projects is a 300MW San Juan province solar PV initiative, Centenario, planned by Argentina’s biggest generator, Central Puerto.

Centenario is earmarked for mining jurisdiction Iglesia department, home to engineering phase copper-gold-silver project Josemaría.

Central Puerto, and others, have announced plans to provide clean power to mining operations in the country’s north.

The biggest project in the registry is 330MW San Martín III, planned for Catamarca province by developer La Perla. 

Copper and lithium jurisdiction Catamarca is home to multiple mining projects.

Aluminum producer Aluar also registered major wind projects: phase 3 (81MW, completed earlier this year) and phase 4 (312MW) expansions of the second stage of its wind complex in Chubut province. Output from the turbines is used for Aluar manufacturing and some is sold on the Mater term market, where the likes of factories buy clean power from renewable generators.  

Mater demand has been driving growth of Argentina's installed renewables capacity.
