Ascenty expects first Colombian datacenter to go live in 4Q24
Brazil’s Ascenty expects to launch its first datacenter in Colombia in the fourth quarter of 2024, COO Marcos Siqueira told BNamericas.
Ascenty's Colombia plans do not involve, at least for now, the construction of datacenters from the ground up, but rather the adaptation, modernization and retrofitting of existing structures.
“In Colombia, we decided not to buy land, but to buy buildings, so that our time-to-market could be faster,” said Siqueira.
Initially, however, the company expected to activate the first of the two sites planned in Colombia by the end of this year.

“We are getting faster now in the retrofit part of the first building. This process is relatively quick. The problem is the delivery time for equipment,” added Siqueira, in reference to the supply chain constraints faced by the datacenter industry since the pandemic outbreak.
In total, Ascenty is designing two twin datacenters for Colombia, each with 12MW in capacity. For now, the company does not have 100% of the first site's capacity contracted.
With the entry into Colombia, Ascenty intensifies local competition and joins other large players in the datacenter sector, such as HostDime, Equinix and Odata, all of which have active datacenters in the country.
As BNamericas reported, Equinix is launching this month its second datacenter in Colombia.
Scala will soon join the fray, with its first datacenter in the country going into operation later this year.
Regarding smaller players, Brazil’s V.tal pushed the go-live of its second datacenter in Colombia’s Barranquilla city, Chivas 2, to the second half.
Overall, Ascenty lists 34 datacenters in operation, development or construction in four countries: Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Colombia. Of the total, 24 are in operation and 10 in development/construction.
Of the 24 datacenters in operation, 20 are in Brazil and two each in Mexico and Chile.
