Asuncion landfill bidding due end-Dec.

An international bidding process to build and operate a new sanitary landfill in Paraguay's capital Asuncion is due by end-December, a city waste management department official told BNamericas. The municipality is in the process of buying the plot of land where the landfill will be built, said the official, adding that it has yet to be defined whether one company would be responsible for building and operating the landfill, or if separate companies will be hired for each process. The concession would run at least 10 years and also includes the construction of a transfer station. The new landfill will replace the metropolitan region's saturated Cateura landfill, which although slated to close by year-end, will continue to operate until April-May when the new facility is ready, said the official. According to preliminary information, potential bidders must have experience in a sanitary landfill contract serving at least 600,000 residents, and handling at least 800t/d of waste, and 400t/d for transfer stations. Asuncion and the 10 municipalities that make up the metropolitan region generate 1,200t/d of waste.
