AT&T Mexico launches LTE-M network

US telco AT&T completed the software upgrades needed to launch the first LTE-M network in Mexico, which was specifically designed for machine-to-machine connections.

AT&T said in a press release that the launch of the network was made possible after several pilot programs conducted earlier this year.

The telco carried out commercial LTE-M pilot programs in the Mexican cities of Tijuana and Puebla as well as an international data roaming test between Mexico and the US.

According to AT&T, its LTE-M network allows for improved indoor and underground coverage, longer battery life in connected devices, and the use of smaller internet of things equipment.

The LTE-M network is also suitable for smart city applications, including smart electricity meters, merchandise monitoring solutions, security systems, and supply chain management tools.

The network upgrade helps AT&T move forward in the race for IoT networks in Mexico.

Competitor and market leader Telcel announced in May that it would launch its 4.5G IoT network by year-end. Telcel has not made further announcements regarding this launch and it is unknown if its 4.5G network is online or not.
