AT&T to implement IoT system in Mexico City market

US telco AT&T signed an agreement with Mexico City's economic development secretariat (Sedeco) to implement an internet of things (IoT) pilot program in one of the city's markets.

The operator will provide Wi-Fi in the Río Blanco market in Gustavo A. Madero district with the aim of facilitating transactions, increasing business opportunities, and improving customer and retailer experience.

The initiative entails the installation of video surveillance and video analytics systems. The latter will analyze movements and speed patterns, detecting irregularities, among other functions, AT&T said in a press release.

The operator will use its Control Center IoT platform for the first time in Mexico, which manages connected devices in real time.

The pilot program reiterates AT&T's interest in carrying out connectivity-based smart city initiatives in Mexico. The telco is also working on deploying a Wi-Fi network in the Mexico City metro system.

The operator's network currently covers 90mn people, up from 78mn reported at the end of last year.
