AT&T reaches over 110 Mexican cities

AT&T Mexico's LTE network now covers 111 cities, a considerable jump from the 42 cities covered in April.

Some of the cities that were linked to the US telco's network in the past six months include Acapulco, Chetumal, Durango, Juárez, Nogales, Rio Bravo, Tecate, Tijuana and Valladolid.

After the acquisition of local telcos Nextel and Iusacell, AT&T launched its 4G network in six Mexican cities in October last year. The telco expects to cover 70mn people by the end of this year and 100mn by 2018. To achieve its objectives, the company will invest US$3bn in Mexico by 2018.

Ralph de la Vega, vice chairman of AT&T, said the company grows almost on a weekly basis. This can be seen with the telco's coverage expanding from 61 Mexican cities in July, when it presented its quarterly results, to 111 in two months.

A study from wireless coverage specialist OpenSignal indicates that AT&T provides the fastest network in Mexico, beating Telcel and Telefónica. According to video streaming company Netflix, Mexican carriers are the fastest in the Latin American region.
