AT&T smart city drive lands in Quintana Roo

AT&T signed a collaboration agreement with the government of Mexican state Quintana Roo to deploy internet of things systems in its main cities.

The agreement is part of an AT&T smart city drive that includes an IoT pilot program in Mexico City.

Andrés Canales, deputy VP of AT&T México's IoT division, said connectivity will boost Quintana Roo's commerce and tourism. Home to some of Mexico's most popular destinations – such as Cancún, Cozumel, Tulum and the Riviera Maya – the state was visited by 16mn tourists last year.

AT&T and Quintana Roo's development and financing agency Idefin will now define the scope of the project and announce the work plan in the first quarter of next year.

Since its entry into the Mexican market in 2015, AT&T committed to investing US$3bn by 2018. The telco's LTE network currently covers 90mn people on the country.
