Ava Telecom deploys edge datacenters in São Paulo state

Corporate and wholesale telecoms provider Ava Telecom said it started deploying a network of edge datacenters in São Paulo state, where its operations for internet services providers (ISPs) are concentrated.

The deployment is carried out in partnership with Multiway, Leveros Solar and BlumaTech

Multiway is the manufacturer of the racks and servers, while Leveros will supply photovoltaic panels, Ava said in a press release.

Using redundant power supply, the edge sites are powered by a local network, autonomous generators, batteries and solar energy, with the surplus returning to the network, the company said, adding that cooling and temperature control systems are also powered this way.

A specialist in IoT and telemetry, BlumaTech will be responsible for the integration and control of the operations.

"With the continuous growth in demand for big data, popularization of streaming platforms, expansion of IoT and automation tools, it’s essential that the market offers increasingly lower latencies to the user," said Ava's CEO Paul Sassin.

"Thus, we’re dedicating ourselves so that companies in the region, particularly the hundreds of ISPs operating in Brazil, many of which are our customers, can offer a better experience to their customers, while reducing their operating costs," he added.

The company said it believes the increased connectivity brought by the edge sites will be especially beneficial for the state's large agribusiness industry.

Ava did not disclose any figures regarding how much it is investing in the project.

GOING TO THE EDGE

Edge datacenters have the same components as traditional datacenters, but they occupy smaller spaces and are located at the end of transport networks, bringing content closer to end users.

In Latin America there has been an increase in this type of datacenter and growth is set to accelerate with the new demands brought on by 5G technology.

América Móvil's Embratel is a company that recently announced its expansion into the segment.

The company is building three sites this year and another 12 next year, Mário Rachid, Embratel's head of digital solutions, recently told BNamericas

AWS has also announced the installation of a new cloud edge location in Brazil’s Fortaleza, while modular datacenter manufacturer Gemelo sees its business expanding in the wake of the decentralized applications.

Founded in 2013, Ava serves ISPs in São Paulo state with an optical ring (backbone) of around 3,000 km. This network connects the interior of the state to the main traffic exchange points in the country and to large datacenters, such as those owned by Ascenty, Tellium and Equinix.

Ava also has its own core datacenters in the cities of São Paulo and Campinas.
