Bahia to invest US$220mn in construction, modernization of schools
Brazil’s Bahia state announced investment of 1.2bn reais (US$220mn) to construct and modernize public schools.
In the first stage, as part of a partnership between the state’s education department and Bahia’s urban development company Conder, 26 new schools will be built, 34 will be modernized, 10 will be renovated and eight will be expanded.
The work will benefit 55,000 students in 44 municipalities, the Bahia government said in a statement.
"The school protects the community and, at the same time, the community protects the school, because here, without a doubt, are our treasures. It’s not for the future, it’s for now, it’s for the present. These schools will reach quilombos [lands founded by people of African origin], indigenous villages, districts in rural areas," said Bahia governor Jerônimo Rodrigues.
