Barrick appoints new expl, corp. dev. VP

Toronto-based gold miner Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX) has appointed Alex Davidson as executive vice-president for exploration and corporate development, the company said in a statement. Davidson, who was executive vice-president of exploration, will help coordinate efforts between the company's exploration and corporate development teams, according to Barrick. Davidson joined the company in 1993, overseeing the company's expansion of its exploration program into South America. Barrick is one of the world's largest gold companies in terms of production and reserves. The comapny is building new mines with an eye to reaching 6.8-7Moz annual production by 2007. The firm expects to begin production at two new mines in South America in 2005: Peru's Lagunas Norte in 3Q05 and Argentina's Veladero in 4Q05. It has also budgeted US$9mn in 2005 for exploration of the border region between Argentina and Chile.
