Battery storage carves a niche in Panama power roadmap
Battery energy storage system (BESS) projects are a promising option for Panama’s power system, according to state power transmission company Etesa.
The outlook is part of the operator’s proposed 2023-27 plan for the national interconnected system (PESIN).
“In view of the constant disruptions that the energy supply had in 2023, it is recommended to increase the power reserve through the implementation of BESS systems that provide support against frequency and voltage variations,” the roadmap highlights.
The most recent PESIN did not consider such projects because it argued that their development in the region had not reached an adequate maturity level to make them attractive.
The national energy department had called on Etesa to include BESS in its next PESIN.

Public services regulator Asep will accept observations and recommendations to the PESIN, available here, through May 28.
