Belize doubling down on energy storage actions

Belize has taken another step to incorporate battery energy storage systems (BESS) into its power grid.

Belize Electricity (BEL) is accepting expressions of interest (EOIs) to supply 20MW/80MWh of BESS to support the integration of renewable energies.

The power utility looks to add the capacity by March 2025, “to help mitigate the current and continuing risk of capacity shortages due to the sharp increases in-country demand which has exceeded available power supply from existing in-country power sources,” BEL highlights.

EOIs are due by August 28, according to procurement information available in the Documents box in the top-right corner.

Qualified participants may be invited to take part in the subsequent request for proposals.

Last month, the government issued a call to support the procurement, supply, installation, operation and maintenance of a 40MW BESS.
