Belize readying power grid expansion amid demand uptick
Belize Electricity (BEL) seeks contractors for power distribution projects to be carried out in 2024-26.
The work entails the construction of high and low voltage overhead infrastructure.
The deadline to submit documents is February 9, according to bidding information available here and in the Documents box in the top right corner.
In a recent filing to the country’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC), BEL said “there is currently an in-country energy supply shortage due to delays in initiating the process to procure permanent in-country generation capacity.”
The power utility’s assessment was made as part of a request to purchase a 21MW mobile gas turbine from General Electric for 30mn Belize dollars (US$15mn) that would be deployed at San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.
According to BEL, peak demand this year is forecast to hit 130MW and grow 10MW annually up to 2026, while in-country firm capacity is 114MW.
The PUC did not entertain the request and instead ordered BEL to open a competitive process to lease or purchase containerized units, totaling no more than 5MW for San Pedro.
In addition, the regulator called on BEL to request a short-term increase of capacity from Mexico’s state power company CFE beyond the contracted 55MW and finalize talks with Bapcol for the addition of 15MW solar.
