BHP aiming to restart Cerro Colorado mine with US$60mn project
BHP has submitted a project worth US$60 million for environmental review with the aim of restarting operations at its Cerro Colorado copper mine, in northern Chile.
The open pit mine was temporarily closed in November.
According to the environmental impact statement, presented this week to environmental review agency SEA, BHP subsidiary Minera Cerro Colorado will develop a program of 370 drill holes, 185 platforms and 92 prospecting areas to collect information in order to analyze the future potential of the mine, located in Tarapacá region.
The project's execution would take a year and a half, starting in March 2025, according to the document.
Before its temporary closure last year, the mine produced 35,000t of copper cathodes. Annual output totaled more than 100,000t from 1999 until 2009, when production began to fall due to lower grades caused by the deposit's depletion.
