Bolivia awards contract for two wind farms

Bolivian state power company Ende has awarded a contract to develop wind farms La Ventolera (24MW) and Warnes II (21MW).
The winner is Powerchina Zhongnan Engineering, which was the sole bidder in the call launched in May for the projects’ design, installation and start-up.
Powerchina’s proposal was 55.8mn euros (US$54.5mn) – 1.76% below Ende’s estimated price – and an execution window of 662 days, procurement information shows.
La Ventolera is planned for Tarija province and Warnes II would be built in Santa Cruz province. French development agency AFD will help fund the projects.
Current installed wind capacity in the country comes from Ende plants El Dorado (54MW, pictured), San Julían (39.6MW), Qollpana (27MW) and Warnes (14.4MW).
The country’s goal is to double electricity generation with renewable sources by 2030.
Authorities have pinned hopes that renewable energies will gradually replace natural gas-fired power generation to free up gas to help cover domestic supply, fulfill export pledges and industrialize the hydrocarbon, amid falling gas production.
