Bolivia cable car project begins operations

Bnamericas

Bolivia's public works ministry announced that the cable car system connecting capital La Paz to neighboring El Alto city began limited operations.

The project dubbed 'Mi Teleférico' started mid-2012, when Austrian firm Doppelmayr won a US$235mn government contract that will ultimately see construction of three lines with 18,000 passengers/hour capacity by August.

Initial month-long operations will offer limited-hours service in one of the three lines, with the goal of transporting more than 80,000 people on guided tours to introduce the service.

Normal operations for the red line - a nine-minute trip from the old La Paz train station to El Alto's 16 de Julio area - will begin in early May. All three lines will be operational by end-year.

Officials stated that tickets will be priced at a similar rate to ground transport between both cities.
