Bolivia investing in sewerage, irrigation projects

Bnamericas

Construction is underway on the San Blas sewage treatment plant in the Bolivian city of Tarija, state news service ABI reported.

The 103mn-boliviano (US$14.5mn) project has been pending since 2010.

The plant, which is due to take 12 months to build, will prevent further pollution of the Guadalquivir river, a major cause of diseases such as hepatitis, mayor Rodrigo Paz said in a ceremony. The project includes wastewater pipelines in 30 Tarija neighborhoods, he said.

Tarija, a city of 180,000 in the eastern lowlands, is the capital of Tarija department, home to the country’s largest natural gas fields and a major farming region.

In other water infrastructure news, Bolivia’s national development fund (Fonadin) will invest 60mn bolivianos this year in 40 irrigation projects in Cochabamba department, ABI reported.

The projects will irrigate 1,500ha of farmland in a dozen municipalities, ABI cited Fonadin director Erlan Oropeza as saying.
