Bolivian tin miner Huanuni to build tailings dam
Bolivian state mining company Empresa Minera Huanuni is expected to start building a US$50mn tailings dam on October 15.
The 64ha project, which will take about 18 months to build, will store tailings from the company's Lucianita plant for the next 24 years, congressman Rubén Gutiérrez said.
The tin mining operation near the community of Villacollo currently dumps its tailings into the San Juan de Huanuni river, Gutiérrez told state news agency ABI.
Bolivia's mining exports dropped 10.4% year-on-year to US$1.187bn through August. Exports were hit by falling metals prices and a month long protest in the mining region of Potosí.
