BP finds oil traces off Brazil's coast
BP has found oil traces in its Pau Brasil exploration block in the Santos basin pre-salt, off Brazil's southeast coast, according to oil and gas watchdog ANP.
The traces were identified through well 1-BP-12D-RJS, in waters 2,283m deep.
Finding hydrocarbons traces does not mean a new commercial discovery. To reach that point a series of factors must be considered, such as the size of the oil column or volume of natural gas in situ, and how much of it can be extracted in an economically feasible manner.
Since January 2024, three other oil trace findings were reported to the ANP, in blocks POT-M-853 and POT-M-762 operated by state company Petrobras, and in ES-T-516 (BGM).
