Brazil approves US$80mn to rebuild Porto Alegre airport

Brazilian airport regulator ANAC approved 426 million reais (US$80mn) in compensation to be paid to Fraport Brasil, the concessionaire of Salgado Filho airport in Porto Alegre, to support reconstruction of the complex after it was hit by unprecedented floods in May.

Salgado Filho has been closed since early May, when much of Rio Grande do Sul state was brought to a standstill by heavy rains and the ensuing floods, which caused widespread damage to infrastructure.

"Fraport requested total compensation of 925mn reais for rebuilding Salgado Filho airport. After reviewing the request, Anac's board of directors approved 362mn reais for reconstruction and an additional 64mn reais to maintain airport operations during the reconstruction process," ANAC said in a statement.

The deal announced by ANAC will now will be forwarded to the ports and airports ministry and to the federal audit court (TCU) for approval and oversight.

"The funds will be transferred to the concessionaire in installments as the need for expenses for the reconstruction of the airport is proven," ANAC added.

German group Fraport AG Frankfurt won the 25-year concession contract for the airport at an auction in 2017.

Fraport is currently working to free up 1,700m of the airport runway by October. In a second stage, the company will carry out repairs on the remaining 2,000m for the full resumption of operations in December.
