Brazil clarifies mining dam regulations

Brazil concluded a two-year process and created a regulation to support victims of mining dam incidents.
"After years of waiting, we managed to take a first and fundamental step by creating a national law in which the Brazilian State defines who those affected by dams are," energy and mines minister Alexandre Silveira said in a statement.
“With a text created in partnership with [social movement] MAB, we were able to guarantee security, social and economic development, in addition to ensuring the rights of families, correct environmental licensing and the safety of the population living near the dams,” he added.
Dam safety became a focus after tailings facilities collapsed in 2015 and 2019, killing hundreds and causing major environmental damage.
Legal debates and compensation negotiations have been dragged out because of a lack of clear definitions regarding dam incident victims.
