Brazil expects US$4.4bn investments from early renewal of FCA concession

Brazil’s transport regulator ANTT expects the early renewal of the Ferrovia Centro-Atlântica (FCA) rail concession to unlock investments of nearly 24 billion reais (US$4.4bn).

"The FCA concession contract is scheduled to end in 2026, and the renewal proposal extends its validity for another 30 years, with investments of almost 24bn reais," said ANTT in a statement.

Operated by logistics firm VLI, the railway has an extension of 7,857km and crosses the states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Sergipe, and the federal district.

Renovation works on 5,725km will commence once the new contract is signed.

ANTT said it will hold public consultation meetings about the early renewal during October 7-21, changing the period from the previous plan of September 30-October 7 without giving a reason for the postponement.

Amid major fiscal pressure, the government has tried to speed up the early renewal of rail concessions to generate more investments from private firms in the sector.
