Brazil finmin reportedly unhappy with health regulator price calculations
The Brazilian finance ministry is reportedly taking issue with the methodology used by health insurance regulator ANS to authorize price increases for individual health insurance plans.
In June, ANS approved a price hike of 10% for such plans, which was well above the annual inflation rate in May of 2.88%. Above-inflation price increases are not uncommon since costs in the health insurance industry have increased faster than inflation.
A consumer protection organization tried to block the 10%-hike through a local court but an appeals court upheld the decision by ANS.
The finance ministry has now joined the fry by requesting details about the price calculation methodology used by ANS, according to local daily Folha de S. Paulo.
There are conceptual errors in the ANS calculation because it allows health operators to pass on the cost of efficiency failures to consumers, the paper reported unnamed ministry staff as saying.
Amid the growing controversy, ANS will hold public hearings on July 24-25 to discuss the issue of price increases.
