Brazil LNG regasification project moves forward

Brazil’s environmental regulator Ibama will hold a public hearing next month for the project to build the São Luís LNG regasification terminal (TGNL), in Maranhão state.

At the November 10 hearing, project owner LC Terminais Portuários will present its environmental impact study, which is a requirement for obtaining a license from Ibama.

Located on the Boa Razão island in São Marcos bay, the TGNL will be able to store 150,000m3 of LNG and regasify up to 23.8Mm3/d (million cubic meters per day).

The terminal is expected to become a hub for LNG imports and potentially support production fields in Maranhão and the northeast region, optimizing gas distribution and strengthening the region's energy grid.

The project involves the construction of an island-type pier, where a floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) will remain permanently moored.

The FSRU will be able to receive LNG carriers with the capacity to transport up to 170,000m3, whether imported or produced domestically.

Once received at the terminal, the LNG will be stored, regasified and transported via pipeline for distribution in the region.
