Brazil oks studies for US$350mn irrigation PPP
The Brazilian government authorized studies to advance with a PPP contract for an irrigation project in Bahia state that will require an investment of around 1.75bn reais (US$350mn).
The studies will be coordinated by the regional development ministry and the São Francisco and Parnaíba valley development company, Codevasf.
“With the implementation of this irrigation project, we will mobilize around 1.75bn reais in private sector investments, which should allow the creation of jobs, food production and the development of the territory of the southwestern region of Bahia," said Codevasf president Marcelo Moreira in a statement.
The contract for the irrigation project in the Iuiu valley is expected to be offered via an auction in the first half of 2026, Moreira said.
Preliminary studies indicate that the irrigable area is 65,000ha has great productive potential due to the quality of the soil, the favorable climate and the capture of water from the São Francisco river, in addition to an adequate road network for transporting production, according to Codevasf. Initiatives to implement such a project in Iuiu valley began in the 1990s, when the first studies were carried out.
