Brazil pay-TV: fiber was only tech to grow in November
With the Brazilian economy in a trough, fiber optics was the only pay-TV technology to show growth in terms of subscribers during November.
According to data just released by telecoms regulator Anatel, Brazil ended the month with 19.16mn pay-TV subscriptions, or the equivalent of 28.8% of the country's households.
Fiber optic services grew to 166,918 accesses from 161,300 in October.
Meanwhile, satellite accesses fell for the eighth consecutive month to 11.24mn, accounting for 58.6% of the total customer base, and cable TV was down to 7.74mn from 7.78mn accesses at end-October (40.4%).
América Móvil companies NET, Claro and Embratel (Telecom Americas) saw their customer base slip to 9.98mn subscribers, while AT&T's Sky Brasil's client base shrank to 5.41mn. The two groups had 52.1% and 28.2% of the market, respectively.
Telefônica/GVT together saw their market share fall slightly to 9.55%, or 1.83mn customers, while Oi's customer base was almost flat at 1.16mn, giving it a 6.09% market share.
