Brazil port terminal auctions advance

Brazil’s waterways authority, Antaq, scheduled a public comment session for August 21, related to the MCP03 terminal concession at Santana port in Amapá state.

"The terminal, intended for the handling and storage of bulk vegetable solids, especially soy and corn, has a brownfield area of 11,680m2 and the expectation is that around 89mn reais (US$18mn) will be invested, of which 20mn reais will be for improvements to the existing infrastructure," Antaq said in a statement.

On August 11, the government concluded auctions for four other port terminals, involving more than 200mn reais and combined expected investments of 100mn reais.

“We raised a very important fee value for public coffers. But the most important thing is that this auction means investment. Three important players were competing and winning. This means greater competition, which will lead to lower prices for consumers,” Antaq head Eduardo Nery said in a press release.

Three terminals are at Maceió port in Alagoas state and one is in Ceará state.

Originally, the government was also planning to offer a fifth contract at the same auction, for a terminal in Porto Alegre port in Rio Grande do Sul state.

BNamericas takes a look at the details.
