Brazil posts new oil and gas production record

Brazil produced 4.48Mboe/d (million barrels of oil equivalent per day) in July, according to local sector regulator ANP. 

The figure surpassed the previous record set in June, with 4.32Mboe/d. 

Oil production was 3.51Mb/d, up 4.3% from the previous month and 18.6% compared to July 2022. 

Natural gas output in July was 154Mm3/d (million cubic meters per day), climbing 1.2% month-on-month and 13.6% year-on-year.

Brazilian nuclear sector association Abdan and Diamante Energia are organizing a mission to the latter’s Jorge Lacerda thermoelectric complex, in Santa Catarina state. 

The decarbonization-focused initiative will help deepen knowledge about sustainable technologies and promote the exchange of experiences with a focus on small modular reactors (SMRs), Abdan said in a statement. 

Scheduled for September 4-5, the mission will include companies like Andrade Gutierrez, OEC Engenharia, MPE Engenharia, Tractebel Engie, EDF Brasil, Holtec, Westinghouse, Atech and Rosatom.

Statkraft Energias Renováveis (SKER) signed an agreement with EDP Renováveis to acquire two wind farms in Rio Grande do Norte state. 

Together, the Jerusalem and Boqueirão farms consist of 62 turbines and have 260MW of installed capacity, SKER said in a release.

SKER controls 19 renewable generation assets in Brazil with around 450MW of installed capacity, and has more than 600MW of wind power under construction in the state of Bahia.

Brazil’s national oil company Petrobras said it signed MOUs with the China Development Bank and the Bank of China. 

The five-year MOUs will look into investment and cooperation opportunities in the decarbonization and green finance areas, financing Petrobras' supply chain, as well as facilitating and increasing commercial and financial operations between the NOC and Chinese companies.

BorgWarner said it plans to expand the assembly of battery systems at its plant in Piracicaba, in São Paulo state.

Opened in February, the plant assembles battery management systems, battery connection modules, as well as charging and control units.

The company believes local production of batteries for electric vehicles can contribute directly to the expansion of electromobility in Brazil.

CPFL Energia is developing a project in partnership with Brazilian telecom research and development center CPQD and BYD to create energy storage products from used batteries. 

"It is possible for a battery to have a longer useful life of between five and 10 years…for different uses such as storing energy generated by PV solar systems and other intermittent sources, or as a backup in telecommunication stations," CPFL’s innovation manager, Rafael Moya, said in a release.
